The genre

A thriller can be stereotypically a novel, play or film that usually has an exciting plot that typically includes crime.

Black swan - opening scene

This scene creates tension by the scene starting off peaceful and ordinary to then switching it up to become 'nail bitting' as the main female character starts to look frightened and the music starts speeding up and it looks like she has no control over what she is doing and how she is dancing.

Sound

• Diegetic sound is used throughout the scene of her dancing. The sound is instrumental music and the music often heard at the Ballet.
• The diegetic sound starts to become deeper and faster as she gets into the dance with the male character and he seems to become a fear of hers and he suddenly changes costume into black clothes with a lot of feathers.

Camera

• A close up is used when she is dancing it just shows the audience her feet and her perfect technique. This is used because it shows the audience that she knows whats shes doing and that she doesn't have any fault and that she is one of the best dancers.

Editing

• A high angle shot is used when she has finished dancing and she has sat on the floor. The camera has moved to become higher than her which maybe shows she has been looked down on before from other dancers or her teachers.

Mise-en-scene

• The main female character is wearing a traditional white ballet leotard which shows she is proud of being a ballerina and she takes it seriously. It also fits in with the title being 'Black Swan' even though she is dressed in all white.
• The main male character at the start is wearing traditional black ballet clothing which shows he wants to be a ballerina. But then he suddenly changes into black feathers and acts as if he is a bad person which is trying to take her dream away from her. It also goes with the title of the film being 'Black Swan' as he is dressed as if he is a black swan..

Skyfall - Opening scene

This creates tension because it shows us the narrative of the film which is trying to get the hard drive back which has been taken. It also shows us that the people who have taken it are violent as they have killed and injured another agent who got in their way, this causes tension because we are on 'James Bonds' side and we want him to succeed but because he hasn't that makes us want to watch it more to see if he does or not at the end.

Sound

• At the very start it has the very famous James Bond sound (instrumental) which is non-diegetic.
• Non diegetic sound when he first enters the room and we can see the dead man lying on the floor. A quiet high ticking type of sound is used, which could indicate that James Bond is running out of timing with finding the hard drive.

Editing

• Pan is used when he is looking around the room to the two dead men lying on the floor. The camera is used as the point of view from how James Bond sees it. 
• An action match is used when he is leaving the room with the injured man. The camera is behind the injured man sitting up in the chair and Bond is behind him leaving the room, then moves to the camera being in front of Bond walking out and the injured man behind him. This is used to show both the injured agents body language and Bonds reactions which is Bond feeling guilty and giving him a one last look as he feels sorry for him.

Mise-en-scene

• A gun is used as a prop to show he is high up as an agent and is trusted to use one which indicates to the audience he will most likely be the main character.
• James Bond is dressed in a smart suit which again shows he is important as an agent and that he cares about what he looks like and how he is seen to other people.

Camera

• Long take is used from when he is walking up to the room to when he starts talking on his phone or through a microphone attached to him. This is used to show the whole room instead of switching shots which then doesn't show us everything. 
• A close up is used when he is walking down the corridor before he gets into the room with the dead men. This is used to show his facial expressions which are neutral. 

Jurassic World - Opening scene

This opening scene creates tension by using the deep, fast paced music whilst zooming into the different places. This works well with the titles as well as the different titles have a dramatic font to them which goes with the type of film as the fonts capitalized which being in blocks but it has the vintage look to it.

Sound

• There isn't any diegetic sound in this scene but it is full of non -diegetic sound which also creates tension for the audience. It is a loud, instrumental sound which draws the audience in to watch more of it.
• They have used all natural lighting, but it is very dark which adds to the type of film that it is.

Editing 

• Zoom and slow motion are used together when the different places are shown. They slowly zoom into each location which makes the audience feel like they are being taken to that place.
• After a location is shown it dissolves into a black screen with titles on, which makes it flow.

Camera

• A close up is used when we suddenly see the dinosaurs foot. This causes tension because it is dramatic and so sudden and we aren't suspecting it. 

Lost Highway Opening Sequence

This opening sequence creates tension because it is very slow and dramatic with all the dark colours and the dramatic line the man at the door says at the door through the wireless telephone doorbell. This makes the reader want to watch more because they want to find out what the main male character does with that message and how he reacts, also by it being very slow paced it draws them in because most films are upbeat, fast paced with lots of vibrant colours whereas this is the complete opposite.

Mise-en-scene

• Easy location
• At the start he has a cigarette in his hand - to give him a harder edge
• He is wearing his dressing gown, which means he has just got out of bed. It also means he is a lazy character as he still hasn't gotten up.

Camera

• Long shot when the camera is zoomed in to the house at the window and you can see his whole body, that is also to show he is in his dressing gown and has just got out of bed. 
• Extreme close up when he is sat at the table with his cigarette in his hand before the phone call, to show his is a tougher guy.

Editing

• Shot reverse shot when he is sat at the table with his cigarette and then it moves to the doorbell then back to his face to show his reaction which is very neutral.
• Long take when he is listening to the voice through the phone on the wall. 

Sound

• Low key lighting at the start where he hasn't yet pulled his blinds up so it is very dark which builds up the tension.
• High key lighting when he starts walking towards the windows to look outside at who gave him the message, this is natural lighting and makes it look a lot more life like and real. 
• There is both diegetic sound and non diegetic sound.
• Non diegetic sound is used when the voice has just come through to him, its a deep, quiet sound which makes the audience feel frightened because they don't understand whats happened yet. 
• Diegetic sound is used when he is walking into the other room and you can hear police sirens.
